No excuses.  We’ve been busy, but that’s beside the point.  Enjoy:

Around 10 p.m., as Labor Day was winding down and my anxiety was winding up in anticipation of my fast-approaching date with the Graduate Record Exam, Lily’s face collided with a coffee table edge.  Ten minutes later, we were at the Tacoma General ER, wondering how on earth doctors give babies stitches, hoping in the relatively short history of modern emergency medicine someone had developed a truly gentle way to coax suture thread through a baby’s eyebrow.  Ha.

Thankfully, the attending physician declared the wound “not gaping” and decided a few applications of Dermabond, a glue for superficial cuts, would do the trick.  However, despite the downgraded seriousness of the injury, Lily was still held down by three adults as the doc applied the superglue.  She struggled, she shrieked, she cried, and she screamed.

But now the injury is forgotten and thankfully Lily bears no ill will toward the coffee table.

The morning of:

Though birthdays ARE terribly exciting, Lily didn’t really understand why we were all abuzz on this day in particular. But then, it didn’t really matter. She was plenty excited anyway, because she’s pretty much excited all the time.  (Case in point:  She loves New York, but she’s never even been to New York!)

When Nana arrived from Port Townsend, the celebrating began in earnest.  Nana treated us to a delicious lunch of blackened Cajun salmon, which Lily devoured, spicy coating and all.  After lunch, Nana, Lily, and I went toy and feeding-supplies shopping. We discovered an incredible toy store in downtown Tacoma, called the Learning Sprout.  It was possibly the finest shopping experience I have had in Tacoma so far, and that goes triple for the kid.  She made out like a bandit, with a new push cart filled with blocks, a xylophone, and a retro Fisher Price telephone from said toy store, and some rockin’ spoons and forks and baby-proof plates from Babies R Us. Yeah!

Later that evening:

If you’re wondering, oh yes, Lily did receive a fistful of this dense, rich, dark, almost deadly chocolate cake, and she liked it. She also got an earful of Nana, Matt, and me belting out a radically discordant “Happy Birthday to You.” I just know she treasured it, if not for the artistry, then for the memories. Yeah, you should have heard it.

Happy Birthday Lily!!!

The hat, although silly, is totally necessary today, because it is currently 47 disappointing little degrees in Tacoma.  However!  Lily has all but mastered the art of walking, AND she’s actually eating solid food three times a day, AND she learned how to clap on Monday.  AND she’s a very good cuddler on these cold, cold nights.

We went to Puget Park today, which has a SWEET playground—definitely the highlight—and some sparse, patchy, bumpy, uneven, uh, meadow to relax on. But the playground, I’m telling you. AWESOME.

First it started hailing. Then came the slush. And then it seemed what was falling was actually snow. But that was yesterday, and it all melted. Nature apparently had another trick up her sleeve, however, because we woke up to find our world looking more like December than March.

March Snow

In other news, I didn’t post anything yesterday despite my promise. I’ll be doing penance today, I assure you. Perhaps three posts in one day? Perhaps.

Lily and I haven’t explored a whole lot of Tacoma yet.  We moved here just before winter, the least opportune season for venturing outdoors in this land of rain and rain and more rain. Last Thursday, however, we decided to hit the town for Tacoma’s Third Thursday Art Walk, come rain or come hellfire. And rain it did—it poured, in fact. After Mr. D dropped us off in soggy downtown Tacoma, I secured Lily in a front pack, and we headed straight for the Museum of Glass. We spent an hour meandering through the current colorful exhibit, which was incredible enough to elicit almost nonstop waving from Lily. (As in, Hello orange vase! Hello multicolored goblets! Hello random woman! Hello everything!) Unfortunately one isn’t allowed to take photos inside, but I snapped this consolation touristy shot of us in front of the museum’s “hot shop,” inside which scruffy, pierced, young folk demonstrate the fiery skills required to make glass objets d’art.
